Delegate Jackson Miller’s Proposed Bill Fighting Illegal Street Gangs Mentioned in the Governor’s State of the Commonwealth Speech
Richmond, VA - During his State of the Commonwealth Address on Monday, Governor Robert F. McDonnell recognized Del. Jackson Miller (R-Manassas) and his proposed legislation to expand the list of gang free zones, House Bill 682.
The legislation will enhance the criminal penalties for the convictions of gang related crimes within 1,000 feet of bus stops, recreation centers, parks, libraries, and hospitals.
“I was very honored that Governor McDonnell would mention me and my legislation during the State of the Commonwealth address,” said Delegate Miller, who represents Manassas, Manassas Park, and parts of Prince William County.
Miller went on to say, “We must give our police officers the tools they need to combat the ever growing influence of street gangs. This legislation will be especially helpful to gang detectives who deal with gang members on a regular basis.” Del. Miller understands the growing threat of gangs because he has witnessed it first hand in his nearly two decades of service as a police officer in the counties of Arlington and Prince William.
“I look forward to working with Governor McDonnell and Senator Marsh on this legislation. Parks and recreation centers are ideal recruiting grounds for street gangs and we must give law enforcement the ability to knock these gangs out of commission.”
